THE SUN GATE
The Sun Gate was my first production in New York that premiered at Areté Venue and Gallery in Greenpoint, Brooklyn on June 9th, 2018. It was then performed over four days at the Live/Wire festival at Temple University from June 28 - July 1st 2018.
Audio was made from recordings of a prepared piano jam with Ahmed "Medley" Abdur-Rahman as percussionist and myself on keys.
The Sun Gate was a collaboration between myself as composer and 360º video artist, Morgaine de Leonardis & Elisa Hernandez as co-choreographer / dancers, Vishaal Ravikumar as projection artist, and Sarah Celona as set designer.
The pocket operator is a product by Teenage Engineering. This powerful device looks like a calculator and fits in the palm of your hand. I've used this instrument to sequence dance beats and to create some ambient tracks.
This collection of works are acoustic selections from my time at Interlochen Arts Academy and Temple University.
La Leyenda de los Amara (2015) was premiered by Momenta String Quartet in New York City.
Mi Noche con los que Vuelan (2013) was premiered by Interlochen Wind Ensemble in Interlochen, Michigan.
Aron for solo cello (2014) was premiered by Nellie Smith at Temple University, Philadelphia PA.
Iremos Juntos (2015) for solo bass was premiered by Joshua Carey at Temple University, Philadelphia PA.
The quenacho is an instrument I found in Cusco, Perú. It is a double flute made by an unknown artisan who combined qualities of the indigenous woodwind instruments to the Inca with contemporary techniques found in western instruments. The design straddles two distinct moments in time and gives a mesmerizing quality to its predecessor, the Peruvian quena.
Canción por el Apu is composed for quenacho & electronics
Tirol features Joshua Carey on the double bass
Send Off features Madison Allwein on flute
Time Dances features Daniel Ian Raymond Smith on Moog Subphatty
